Dr Norman Sartorius obtained his M.D. in Zagreb (Croatia). He specialized in neurology and psychiatry and subsequently obtained a Masters Degree and a Doctorate in psychology (Ph.D.).
Dr Sartorius joined the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1967 and soon assumed charge of the programme of epidemiology in social psychiatry. He was also principal investigator of several major international studies on schizophrenia, on depression and on health service delivery. In 1977, he was appointed Director of the Division of Mental Health of WHO, a position which he held until mid-1993. In June 1993 Dr Sartorius was elected President of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) and served as President-elect and then President until August 1999. In January 1999, Dr Sartorius took up his functions as President of the Association of European Psychiatrists (AEP). Dr Sartorius holds professorial appointments at the Universities of Geneva, Prague, Zagreb and at several other universities in Europe, the USA and China. He is a Senior Associate of the Faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore.
Dr Sartorius has published more than 300 articles in scientific journals, co-authored several books and edited a number of others.

Dr Sartorius is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, a Corresponding Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Medicine and of the Medical Academy of Mexico, a Doctor of Medicine Honoris Causa of the Universities of Umea and of Prague, a Doctor of Science Honoris Causa of the University of Bath, and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is an honorary member of numerous professional associations and advisory boards, both national and international. He is also a member of editorial and advisory boards of many scientific journals.
